…living in Cheltenham isn’t too bad! I’ve developed the most amazing tan over the past week. Wonderful!
I thought I should write a new blog but I’m now not too sure on what to write.
I’ve finished all two of my exam. Both went ok I think and hope! I finished 20 mins early on the last one. I though it be best to leave then instead of panicking and rambling on more and more and making less sense then I probably already did!!
I’m currently waiting to a film to buffer completely on alluc.org. Which is a wonderful site for when boredom kicks in! I’ve watched the whole of Dirty, Sexy Money. Well the first series anyway! I think it’s on 6/7 on tv.
I’m listening to a song by Phil Collins called. “I wish it would rain down”. Always loved the song and the music that goes with it, especially the guitar. And whilst on YouTube the other day, listening to some Mr Collins I thought I’d listen to that one. Only to find that it was Eric Clapton on guitar in the song! I always thought it was a familiar sound!! The video is odd though.
I’m not really sure what to do with myself today. Or tomorrow. I’ve got no work to do. At all. I’ve got one book that I’ll hopefully be doing next year for my Psychoanalysis, Sexuality and Writing module.
Speaking of modules for next year, I’ve been sorting through them all.
I shall give you a breif description of the modules I’m thinking of doing next year. Basically I have to pick 8 modules. 4 for Semester 1 and 4 for Semester 2. Instead of ten like this year.
Sem 1 = 1 for semester 1 (from September till Christmas)
Sem 2 = 1 for semester 2 (from January until May)
Year = 2 = 1 for semester 1 and 1 for semester 2.
Are you following? I get confused! OK, so this is how I’m thinking it’s going to work!
EX (EX is the English Literature code for uni) 203 (The first number represents the year we’re in, and the of course the module code which in this case is 03) Essays in Theory
This module is compulsary, joy!
“This module will introduce students to literary theory of the twentieth century up until 1960. Students study in small groups in a seminar situation guided by a tutor. An example of criticism is read and prepared for group discussion each week, taken from the set anthology. Students familiarise themselves with these examples and analyse the assumptions and critical frameworks inherent in the chosen essays. A particular feature of the module is the emphasis on group work.”
Doesn’t sound too awful! Is is a Semester 1 module
EX213 – Renaissance, Revolution, Restoration: Literature 1580-1700
“This module will guide students through writing in English in the period 1580 – 1700, providing different pathways to do so. These pathways are provided within a historical conspectus of the broad generic divisions of drama, poetry and prose. This double module complements other modules in the EN field, in providing substantial knowledge of and engagement with English writing from the Early Modern period onwards.”
This is a Year long one. Which goes well with….
EX214 – Restoration to the Romantics – The long 18th Century.
“The module introduces students to, and allows selective study of, a variety of writings in the period 1700-1830, including verse, fictional and non-fictional prose, letters and diaries. While its historical parameters lend the module intellectual coherence, the emphasis will be on the discovery of literary variety, and the development of readings capable of discriminating and comparing writings produced in different contexts and obeying different aesthetics.“
This is a Year long one. I fear it may be a looooong 18th century!
EX215 – Psychoanalysis, Sexuality and Writing
“This module explores the relationship between psychoanalysis and writing by exploring some of the key psychoanalytic theories. Debates centred around the issues of sexuality and writing, gender and genre and the construction/representation of sexuality will provide the module focus. A selection of theoretical, fictional and filmic explorations will be studied in the context of the theories propounded by their psychoanalytic forebears.”
This is a Semester 2 module. I need to apply for it asap, as I fear it may be a popular one.
EX218 – Nineteenth Century American Writing
“This module is intended to provide students with a variety of texts, which represent the predominantly New England tradition of fiction, poetry and essay writing of the mid- to late- nineteenth century. Following a broadly chronological model, the course begins with an introduction to transcendentalist thought through the essays of Emerson and the work of Whitman and Thoreau. ‘Canonical’ writing by Nathanial Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Edgar Allen Poe are considered and problematised in the light of Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of an American Slave and the poetry of Emily Dickinson. Finally, Stephen Crane’s The Red Badge of Courage, Henry James’s Washington Square and Kate Chopin’s The Awakening provide texts which look toward twentieth century notions of modernity.”
This is also one I am looking forward too. It’s a Year long module.
For single honours students, the compulsory subjects are Essays in Theory and 2 out of the 3 year long one. Although if I also take the other year long one, and a Semester 2 one. That’s my 8 sorted. God this sounds confusing!!
